The new owners of this rescued one-year-old Border Collie were stunned when their vets discovered that their new dog was neither male nor female, but both.

John and Susan Martin picked up Yumi, a healthy young dog, from Protecting Preloved Border Collies in May. "Soon after we got her home she developed an infection in her 'lady-bits'" said John.

"They feared she had Pyometra - an infection of the uterus which can be fatal in dogs if not caught quickly" he added.

Their local vets in Hull treated her with antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs.

When she didn’t seem to be getting any better they took a closer look and noticed what they thought was a bone growing out of her vulva. Yumi was referred to the Small Animal Teaching Hospital in Liverpool who identified 'the bone' as growing male genitalia.

Yumi had surgery to remove the growth. Then a second operation to spay her revealed what vets first believed to be tumours on her ovaries. But these tumours were discovered to be testicle tissue. They were also removed successfully. The vets explained that although Yumi was 'intersex' (or hermophrodite) she was more female than male.
